As Website Dating is becoming more popular, we have to ask ourselves whether there is a typical profile of a person who uses such services. The answer, to my mind, has to be no, as I can see many distinct categories of people who use online dating.
Personality plays a part, as some people who are less sure of themselves may prefer the initial contact to be online. Those with less self-confidence can dip their toes into online dating and see how it goes.
Geography may also be important as people who live in smaller towns and villages may find it difficult to meet a partner in their home town. Online dating gives them a larger pool of people to look at.
Circumstance and lifestyle are also contributors. If you have a busy job or one with unsocial hours it may be a hindrance in finding someone new. Likewise if you are a single parent it can be hard to go out to the traditional places to meet people.
For some people, who are now used to carrying out their friendships and social interaction online, it is merely an extension of that. So in answer to my own question, no, there is no typical person who uses online dating. It offers many different people different things according to their needs.
